Curriculum and Instruction

Introduction
Curriculum and Instruction is one of the key academic disciplines of modern curriculum and instruction research in China. In 1948, the Institute of Education at National Chekiang University was established as one of the earlier domestic institutes to recruit graduate students in curriculum and pedagogy. The current discipline was combined originally from two disciplines: pedagogy and subject-based pedagogy. It started to enroll students in 1982 and was approved as a master's degree awarding unit in 1984 and then a doctoral degree awarding unit in 2008. Currently, there are three professors, five associate professors, and two “ZJU 100” young professors. Our discipline is home to the Basic Education Curriculum Research Center of the Ministry of Education and the Textbook Research Center of Zhejiang University.


Based on basic and translational research, our members are devoted to exploring theories, methods, and techniques of curriculum and instruction suitable for the practice of basic education in China, linking international advanced educational theory to conduct domestic research, with a focus on promoting curriculum and educational reform in China. The discipline brings together research and teaching expertise in the areas of educational and teaching experiments, curriculum theory and history, curriculum and instruction design, subject teaching, and educational measurement and statistics. Relying on the above expertise, our members actively provide professional advice, practical guidance, and teacher professional development programs for the governments and schools at different levels, contributing significantly to the education development in our country.

 

This discipline places high value on students’ international training. In recent years, stable collaborative relationships with Columbia University, University of California, Berkeley (UCB), University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), University of Wisconsin-Madison, Free University of Berlin, and other institutions have been established for joint training of students at the postgraduate level.
